This 18th century papelera (document / writing box) from Michoacan, circa 1750, is a colonial masterpiece with the original wrought iron strapping, lock-plate, hand painted and hand lacquered surface. The hinged front and lid (both painted inside and out) opening to reveal several small compartments, cubbies and drawers. Painted on all sides with various foliate motifs in blue, green and yellow, all surrounded by a beautiful cochineal base red.
